What it tells you

What an area code can and can't tell you

Where the number is from

The region the number was assigned to. Not where the person is now: people keep their numbers when they move.

The time there

Handy before you return a missed call. Some codes cross time zones, so the lookup shows each one.

Not the type of line

An area code can't tell a mobile number from a VoIP number. Check a full number for that.

FAQ

Questions about area codes

How many area codes are there?
NANPA's database lists 378 area codes in service in the US and its territories, 55 in Canada, and 21 in Caribbean and Atlantic countries that share the +1 calling code. There are also toll-free codes like 800 and codes reserved for special services.
Does an area code show where someone is?
No. It shows where the number was first assigned. People keep their numbers when they move, and internet phone numbers can be used from anywhere, so the person may be far from the area code.
Why do some places have more than one area code?
When an area runs low on numbers, regulators usually add an overlay: a second code for the same area. Existing numbers keep their code, and new lines can get either one. Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, for example, share five: 718, 347, 929, 917, and 465.
Do I need to dial the area code for local calls?
In most places, yes. Only 54 US and Canadian area codes still allow 7-digit local calls. Everywhere else you dial all 10 digits, and some areas ask for 1 + 10 digits. The lookup shows the rule for each code.
Which area codes are international?
21 area codes belong to countries outside the US and Canada, such as Jamaica (876 and 658), the Dominican Republic (809, 829, and 849), and the Bahamas (242). The numbers dial like US numbers, but calls and texts to them are international and can cost extra.
