What's happening with 761
The Kentucky Public Service Commission chose an overlay on July 31, 2025, and NANPA named the new code 761 in August 2025. NANPA estimated it would give the region enough numbers for about 30 years.
The original plan pointed to 2027, but the Commission suspended that schedule in January 2026 and kept it suspended in June 2026. A new schedule is due once 502 is within about 22 months of running out.
Will I need to dial 10 digits?
Eventually. Local calls within 502 can still be dialed with 7 digits today. Once 761 goes ahead, calls within the 502 and 761 area will need the area code. Existing 502 numbers won't change.
