Why was 679 added?
313 is running out of numbers. The Michigan Public Service Commission approved the overlay on May 18, 2023, and in 2025 projected that 313 would run out around the first quarter of 2028.
10-digit dialing is now required
Since October 7, 2025, local calls in the 313 area must include the area code. Calls dialed with only 7 digits don't go through.
The Commission warned that medical alert devices, alarm and security systems, fax machines, and gates that still dial 7 digits need to be reprogrammed. 911 and 988 still work with three digits.
Who gets a 679 number?
679 numbers go out only after the remaining 313 numbers are used, and that timing can shift. Existing 313 numbers don't change, and neither do call prices or what counts as a local call.
