Why was 621 added?

Demand for new numbers in the Houston area was using up the four existing codes. The Public Utility Commission of Texas approved the overlay on October 12, 2023.

Who gets a 621 number?

Only new lines, and only once numbers in the older codes run out. People starting new service or adding a line may get 621. Existing 713, 281, 832, and 346 numbers don't change, and neither do call prices or local calling areas.

Does dialing change?

No. Local calls in the Houston area already need 10 digits. It's worth checking that alarm systems, gate openers, medical alert devices, and fax machines accept 621 as a valid area code.
