Why was 483 added?

NANPA forecast that 334 would run out of numbers by the third quarter of 2026. The Alabama Public Service Commission approved the overlay in March 2024.

10-digit dialing is now required

Since January 23, 2026, local calls in the 334 area need all 10 digits, and 7-digit calls don't go through. Alarm systems, medical alert devices, and auto-dialers set to 7 digits need updating. 911 and 988 still work with three digits.

Who gets a 483 number?

483 numbers go only to new service or added lines, and only after 334 numbers are used up. Existing numbers, rates, and coverage don't change.
