Which time zone is area code 850 in?
Both Central and Eastern. Federal rules put the line along the Apalachicola River, then along the Intracoastal Waterway to the western edge of Gulf County, which is split in two.
West of that line, including Pensacola and Panama City, is Central time. Tallahassee and the counties east of the river are on Eastern time. The box above shows the current time in both.
Why was 448 added?
850 was running short of numbers. The Florida Public Service Commission approved 448 as an overlay on November 5, 2019, so existing 850 numbers kept their code.
How to dial
Since May 22, 2021, local calls in the Panhandle need all 10 digits. Calls dialed with only 7 digits no longer go through.
