Where is area code 942?

942 is an overlay on 416, 437, and 647. The Canadian numbering plan treats the whole area as a single exchange area called Toronto.

Why was 942 added?

Toronto's existing codes were nearing their limit. The CRTC approved 942 as an overlay in Telecom Decision 2023-135 on May 10, 2023. It's the first new Toronto code since 437 arrived in 2013.

What it means for existing numbers

Nothing changes for 416, 437, and 647 numbers. Phone companies could reserve 942 number blocks from October 26, 2024, but no 942 number could work before April 26, 2025.

Does dialing change?

No. All local calls in Toronto already need 10 digits.
