Can You Still Get a 212 Number? How to Get a New York Number Today
212 numbers are almost all taken. Here is why, which New York area codes you can actually get today, and how to pick a NYC number for calls and texts.
Quick answer
Rarely. 212 is Manhattan's original area code, and almost all of its numbers are already in use. New New York numbers usually come from overlay codes: 646 and 332 in Manhattan, 917 across the city, and 718, 347, and 929 in the other boroughs. When we checked on October 10, 2026, 929 numbers were easy to get, while 212, 646, and 917 were not available.
A 212 number has a certain status. It says Manhattan, and it has been around since the first area codes were assigned. That is exactly why it is hard to get one now. If what you really want is a number that reads as New York, you have better options.
Why 212 numbers are so hard to get
Area code 212 was assigned in 1947 and originally covered all of New York City. As demand grew, the city was split and then overlaid with new codes: 718 for the outer boroughs in 1984, 917 citywide in 1992, 646 and 347 in 1999, 929 in 2011, and 332 for Manhattan in 2017.
Overlays exist because the older codes ran out of numbers. People who already have a 212 number tend to keep it, so new lines in New York are usually assigned one of the newer codes.
Which New York area codes you can actually get
This is what we found when we checked available numbers with HashPhone's number supplier on October 10, 2026. Availability changes daily, so treat it as a snapshot.
| Area code | Covers | Added | Availability on Oct 10, 2026 | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 212 | Manhattan | 1947 | None available | | 646 | Manhattan | 1999 | None available | | 332 | Manhattan | 2017 | Very few | | 917 | All five boroughs | 1992 | None available | | 718 | Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island | 1984 | Very few | | 347 | Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island | 1999 | Very few | | 929 | Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island | 2011 | Widely available |
If you want a New York number today, 929 is the realistic choice. A 332 or 718 number is possible if one happens to be free when you look.
Does the area code still matter?
For most personal use, much less than it used to. Any of these codes tells people the number is from New York, and callers rarely know which code belongs to which borough. A local code still helps when your contacts are in New York, because they are more likely to recognize and answer the call.
A 212 number mostly matters if the prestige itself is the point. For calls with friends, dates, landlords, or online signups, a 929 number does the same job.
Be careful with paid "vanity" 212 numbers
Some sellers offer existing 212 numbers for a one-time fee. Before paying, check who will own the number, whether you can move it to another provider later, and what the ongoing monthly cost is. A number you cannot transfer is a number you can lose.
